US stock market closed lower, the Dow Jones fell by 0.75%

U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Staples, Financials and Materials sectors led shares lower.

At closing time on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones fell 0.75%, the S&P 500 index fell 0.85%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.96%.

The top gainers among the components of the Dow Jones index in today’s trading were shares of Verizon Communications Inc, which rose 0.53 points (1.71%), closing at 31.58. Salesforce Inc rose 3.49 points (1.70%) to close at 208.32. McDonald’s Corporation rose 2.35 points (0.92%) to close at 258.38.

The top performers were The Travelers Companies Inc, which fell 4.17 points (2.48%) to end the session at 163.94. Caterpillar Inc was up 6.33 points (2.44%) to close at 252.89, while Walt Disney Company was down 1.43 points (1. 69%) and finished trading at 83.25.

The top gainers among the S&P 500 components in today’s trading were Netflix Inc, which rose 16.05% to 401.77, AT&T Inc, which gained 6.56%, closing at 15.26, and DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc shares rose 3.66% to finish at 81.62.

The worst performers were Genuine Parts Co, which fell 12.51% to close at 130.12. Zions Bancorporation shares lost 9.67% to close at 32.24. Tesla Inc fell 9.30% to 220.11.

The leaders of growth among the components of the NASDAQ Composite index following the results of today’s trading were the shares of SeaStar Medical Holding Corp, which rose in price by 54.35% to 1.19, MMTEC Inc, which gained 51.47 % to close at 2.06, and OUTLOOK THERAPEUTICS INC jumped 39.92% to hit 0.66 at the close.

The worst performers were Generation Bio Co, which fell 50.21% to close at 1.20. EUDA Health Holdings Ltd shares lost 43.31% to trade at 0.80 at the close. NXU Inc fell 35.65% to 0.04.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of securities that fell in price (2,286) exceeded the number of those that closed in positive territory (625), and the quotes of 75 shares remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, shares of 2,607 companies fell in price, 822 rose, and 143 remained at the level of the previous close.

Genuine Parts Co fell to a 52-week low, down 12.51% or 18.61 points to finish at 130.12. Generation Bio Co fell to an all-time low, down 50.21% or 1.21 points to end at 1.20. NXU Inc fell to a 52-week low, down 35.65% or 0.02 points to end at 0.04.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on options trading on the S&P 500, rose 11.34% to 21.40, reaching a new 6-month high.

Gold futures for December delivery added 0.89%, or 17.55, to $1.00 a troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude oil futures prices for December delivery rose 2.46%, or 2.15, to $89.42 a barrel. Brent crude futures for December delivery rose 2.09%, or 1.91, to $93.41 a barrel.

Meanwhile, on the Forex market, EUR/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 1.06, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 149.82.

USD index futures fell 0.29% to 106.04.
